Anita Ekberg

 

Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg (Swedish pronunciation (listen) 29 September 1931 11 January 2015) was an Swedish actress who appeared in American and European films, renowned for her beauty and striking body. She was famous for her iconic character as Sylvia in the Federico Fellini film La Dolce Vita (1960). Ekberg was born in Sweden on 29 September 1931. She was the sixth child of eight. In her teens, Anita worked as a fashion model. Ekberg was a participant in the Miss Malmo competition in 1950 at her mother's urging. This led to the Miss Sweden contest which she took home. Despite speaking very little English she travelled to the United States to compete for the 1951 Miss Universe title (an unofficial pageant at that time, the pageant was officially launched in 1952). Ekberg did not win the title of Miss Universe winner, but she was among six contestants. She did however earn an agreement with Universal Studios as a starlet. Ekberg was an Universal starletin which she was taught dance, drama, and elocution. She appeared briefly in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953) (playing an actress in Venus), Take Me to Town (1953), and The Golden Blade (1953).
